An upcoming box-set edition of R.E.M.'s Out of Time features a disc of previously unreleased demo recordings of each of the album's songs. One of the tracks is "Radio," an early version of the LP's lead track, "Radio Song," that finds Peter Buck playing acoustic guitar. It still features the album version's organ, but lacks rapper KRS-One's intro and rap and some of the orchestral synthesizer filigrees. This version, released Tuesday via NPR, also features drummer Bill Berry singing one of the song's verses.
Out of Time, which turns 25 this year, was the group's first Number One album, thanks in part to the hit singles "Losing My Religion" and "Shiny Happy People." The LP, which won the Best Alternative Music Album Grammy in 1992 and two for "Religion," has since been certified four-times platinum. "Radio Song" came out as a single and made it to Number 48 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart.
The deluxe reissue, due November 18th, will contain a remastered version of the album, a live recording of the group playing at Mountain Stage in Charleston, West Virginia and a Blu-ray containing the studio album in both high-def sound and 5.1 surround sound along with eight music videos and the band's electronic press kit. It also contains liner notes featuring interviews with all four band members and producers Scott Litt and John Keane. The collection will be available as a three-vinyl set and a pared down double-CD versions, as well as being available digitally.
