Fiona Apple Teases Haunting New Music for 'The Affair'

About 80 seconds of new Fiona Apple music, from a previously unreleased song called "Container," will accompany the title sequence of the new Showtime series The Affair, the story of which reportedly inspired the song. The sparse and haunting song tells a story about a woman who died, screaming into a canyon, and how the sound created an avalanche that killed a man, whose widow ultimately "met your daddy and they made you." Nearly a cappella, Apple sings that all she can do from there is to "sink back into the ocean."

"Fiona Apple has been my favorite songwriter since I was 16," The Affair executive producer Sarah Treem said, according to Pitchfork. "I am honored and humbled that she has chosen to lend her talent to our opening title sequence. If our show can approach one-tenth of the depth and complexity of her song, I'll be very happy."

Apple's collaborator and guitarist Blake Mills, with whom she co-headlined the "Anything We Want" tour last year, produced the track. Mills recently recounted to Rolling Stone how he felt apprehensive at first about working with Apple since "there's not a lot of guitar on her records," but she explained that she wanted to work with musicians who react to her music so she can build off it.

"It turned out to be one of the most fun gigs I ever had because I was just getting to play off of her voice every night and the way she would sing songs," says the singer-songwriter, who recently put out the solo record Heigh Ho, which features Apple on two tracks. "She's a direct inspiration, as a vocalist, to things that I'm playing now and sounds that I'm trying to figure out how to get the guitar to do."

The Affair stars Dominic West, Ruth Wilson and Maura Tierney and mediates on the effects of extramarital relationships. It will premiere on October 12th at 10 p.m. EST.
