Jeremy Kays seems like your regular So Cal boy through and through. His mega watt smile and blonde-hair blue-eyes combo are sure to make girls swoon. Not to mention his acoustic guitar and lyrics are just as swoon-worthy.
This 18-year-old Camarillo resident as been interested in music since he was a little tyke in his G.I Joe undies and cowboy boots sitting in front of the T.V. watching Garth Brooks while playing with his mother’s Spanish guitar.
“I would play around, break strings, try to tune it,” said Kays.
His interest and curiosity became a serious passion after a few years of playing bass. He taught himself how to play both bass and guitar. When he was in the 8th grade he found his voice and began writing lyrics and singing in a band. Today he has, “tons of lyrics, I have notebooks full,” said Kays.
Although he is influenced by his Christian beliefs he does not want to focus on just that crowd of people. He has played in a death metal band, played at BB Kings in Universal City Walk, Crossroads Community Church in Camarillo, and played in a pop/punk band.
For him music is like a religion, it’s something he can get lost in.
“[Performing] for me is just totally emotional,” said Kays, “volume starts going up, I start playing harder, I play my heart out. I play to where I can’t breathe anymore, to where I go dizzy.”
Most recently he traveled to Eastern Europe and played everyday, twice a day. This is exactly what he would love to do with his music.
“My music goal is that I just want to make you smile,” said Kays, “I don’t care about making money I just want to play to make people happy.”
He describes his sound to Bright Eyes, Jets To Brazil, and Death Cab for Cutie. At the same time he does not want to plunked into the same category as his acoustic contemporaries. He says that his music is not your average Jack Johnson.
His songs are a journey to listen to, the music flows from slow and steady to a faster climatic point and back down to that same rhythm that had you at the start. His music has a definite Bright Eyes influence but not as much of a cry-yourself-to-sleep feel. The lyrics are more up but the emotion is clear and strong
