"Hailing from New York, which has [arguably] the countrys most-thriving hardcore scene, Lost And No One Knows is a band - while rooted in traditional hardcore - that finds themselves bleeding across barriers into various sub-genres of todays underground musical scenes.
Its hard to not compare them to From Autumn to Ashes due to their setup (their drummer does backup/harmonizing vocals) as well as having a couple of tracks featuring female vocals. But dont be swayed by these two similarities as you wouldnt ever mistake them for FATA (or vice-versa). A melodic mix of hardcore punk, metal, and occasionally hard rock that more often than not comes at you full-force and in your face with crunchy guitar riffs and kick-in-the-balls thundering from the drums and bass.
Their latest EP, self-released but recorded by Bryan Russell at Red Wire Studios, Torch the Sky, is a seven-track venture through every emotion felt by everyone, at one time or another, skillfully displayed in just over twenty minutes. The disc opens with The Art of Putdowns, and youll immediately know what youre in for within the first two minutes: it starts with chaotic guitar work and jagged rhythms before transitioning to almost traditional NY-style hardcore, but then seamlessly careening into a harmonic-driven vocal and musical landscape, similar to what youd hear on underØATHs The Changing of Times album (2002), with screaming layered over singing, until just over the two-minute mark it abruptly starts pounding you with double bass and crunchy/gritty riffs; reminding you that LANOK is, at their very root, very much a hardcore band.
The lyrics cover a broad spectrum, covering everything from heartache, to lust, to love and a lack thereof, and even humor (although extremely sporadic and occasional). Stay Sexys upbeat sound, and the chanting of this aint no disco motherfucker! shows that while these boys may be pissed-off, heartbroken and scorned, they still have a sense of humor, which only adds to the sincerity of the lyrics overall. It shows that the songs they write and play come from the heart, and arent just me-too songs written to fit into a certain scene or musical genre.
Whether its the beautiful voice of guest Suzie Zeldin on What Comes Before the Beginning, or the angst-driven answer in the following Cell Phone Romance, the gritty/crunchiness of the title track and The Art of Putdowns, or the transition of heavy-to-acoustic-then going immediately in a ground-pounding breakdown of Basement Paradox that suits your tastes, theres definitely something for everybody on LANOKs first EP.
With a scene flooded with what people label as screamo bands, LANOK strives to stand out from the hordes of sound-a-likes, and achieves this by letting the emo subject matter take a backseat to their overall heaviness, as well as their inclusion of 2-step beats and circle-pit, windmill-kicking, ground-punching-inducing breakdowns.
As far as being signed to a label goes, its not a matter of if, its just a matter of when."
